Vanessa has over nineteen years’ experience working in health care, residential & forensic settings with children, young people, and families with complex needs. Initially employed as a Residential Worker at SWAAY in 1998, Vanessa has subsequently taken on a variety of roles within the Residential and Therapy teams. Vanessa holds an honours degree in Psychology, an MSc in Forensic Psychology, and a PG Cert in Asperger Syndrome. She have achieved Levels 3 & 4 in Health & Social Care: Children & Young People, and the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Child Care.


Vanessa has played a central role in the promotion of therapeutic care at SWAAY and is passionate about providing each young person with the opportunity to achieve safe, happy and fulfilling lives. Vanessa has overseen the development of our ‘Core Group’ system through which each young person is allocated a representative from the Residential, Therapy and Education teams to work closely with them throughout their placement.


Vanessa is currently promoting a model of Dyadic Developmental Practice across the organisation to support the children and young people to recover from trauma and disrupted attachments through the care, education and therapy that they receive. This includes using the principles of Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy (PACE) with the aim of providing attachment security through consistent and attuned approaches. Vanessa has completed Levels 1 and 2 Training In Dyadic Developmental Practice: Psychotherapy & Parenting.
